Youth volunteers help local community

More than 40 teens have come together in Wausau to make a difference.

"Our students look forward to this every year," said Lance Hoelscher, a pastor at Mount Olive Lutheran Church.

Students from Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Wausau and Zion Lutheran Church in Minnesota are working together to fix a local home.

"It was very interesting, seeing the first part of the week how this place looked," said Greg Stroik, a volunteer.

Volunteers kept busy cleaning, roofing, and painting.

"The transformation of the house, just night and day difference," said Greg Stroik.

Youth volunteers say there were many benefits to their efforts.

"You can see the difference on the house and in them. They're smiling. When we came in they were..didn't expect any of this," said Andy Stroik, a teen volunteer.

Not only did these students help rebuild a home, they built new friendships.

"Clifford and Joy are really cool people and they needed a lot and I feel like we fulfilled their needs," said Andy Stroik.

Although this project has ended, organizers say that the positive experience ensures the kids will be back for more.

"It's a life changing experience for them and they love it and can't wait until next year," said Lance Hoelscher.

The volunteers finished up Friday, but they say they're already looking forward to next summer.
