WAUSAU (WAOW) - A La Crosse man accused of drunken driving in a crash that killed a 22-year-old Loyal mother more than a year ago was sentenced to five years in prison Thursday.
Tyler Deal, 22, pleaded guilty to one felony - homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol content - in a plea bargain, according to online court records. He originally was charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors.
Deal was charged in the Feb. 26, 2012, crash in rural Marathon County that killed Paige Delo of Spencer, a mother of two daughters who was a passenger in his car. Investigators said Deal was drunk when his car ran off the road and hit a power pole.
Marathon County Circuit Judge Jill Falstad ordered that after Deal completes the prison sentence, he serve nine years on extended supervision. One of the conditions is that he participate in victim impact panels and tell his story at least two times a year for nine years, court records said.
Falstad gave Deal 38 days credit on the prison sentence for the time he spent in jail, court records said.
According to court records, Deal's blood-alcohol level was 0.093 percent after the crash. The legal limit to drive is 0.08 percent. He blood also tested positive for marijuana, prosecutors said.
During the sentencing, Deal apologized for what happened and Delo's father said Deal was a good person, prosecutors said.
