Police: Wausau woman attacked in park

Posted: Updated:

A Wausau man faces felony charges after authorities say he attacked a woman at a park.

Robert Woods, 32, appeared in Marathon County court Thursday. He was charged with strangulation and suffocation with threats to injure. He's being charged as a repeat offender because he's been convicted of at least three misdemeanors in the past five years, according to court documents.

Police say this all happened Wednesday morning around 10 a.m. They say a woman was trying to leave the park when Woods came up behind her and threw her to the ground. Authorities say he tried to strangle her and pushed her down an embankment.

Wausau police say the woman resisted and was able to get his license plate number as she called 911.

"This is a very unusual incident anywhere, but especially in central Wisconsin," said Wausau Police Captain Bryan Hilts. "Should we be afraid? No, we shouldn't be afraid, but we should always be aware of our surroundings and be prepared to respond in the extremely unlikely situation like this. She did a great job."

Woods remains in the Marathon County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond. An attorney for Woods is not listed. He's expected to be back in court later this month.

Police say the woman suffered minor injuries.
