WAUSAU (WAOW) – A Wausau firefighters union says the Weston Village Board violated the state's open meetings law in developing and approving plans to merge its fire department with Rib Mountain's.
Wausau Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 415, said it will filed a complaint with the Marathon County district attorney on Wednesday seeking to block the planned merger from moving forward.
“We will not stand by and let important decisions involving public safety to be made behind closed doors,” Local 415 President Jeremy Kopp said in a statement.
Kopp said elected officials in Weston met “unlawfully in secret” with Rib Mountain officials to rush a “hastily constructed” merger plan “without the public's knowledge and without fully considering other more effective alternatives.”
Weston Administrator Daniel Guild said Tuesday that the merger has caused a “lot of consternation” for the village fire department but there have been no violation's of the state's open meetings law.
“The meetings we hold comply with state law,” Guild said. “We look forward to hear what the claims are.”
