Local firefighters union files complaint in planned merger

The union representing Weston firefighters has filed a complaint with the Marathon County District Attorney over the proposed merger between the Weston and Rib Mountain Fire Departments.

It claims that the Weston Village Board violated open meetings laws.

The group held a news conference outside the Marathon County Courthouse on Wednesday to announce the filing.

Local 415 President Jeremy Kopp said he wants the merger put on hold until the complaint is resolved.

"We are all about the public safety. We think that the public should have more say and more study should be done on the plan to merge the two departments," said Kopp.

Newsline 9 talked with Weston Village Administrator Daniel Guild. He said he invites the scrutiny of how the merger was reached and looks forward to informing the public about why it is the right thing to do for the taxpayers.

The Marathon County District Attorney has 20 days to review the complaint.
