WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -

The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department says Lt. Steven Lowe has resigned a day after being arrested in a child sex investigation.

Police Chief Kurt Heuer announced the resignation Thursday but declined further comment.

The resignation came hours after Heuer issued a statement saying Lowe was placed on  administrative leave "in response to an investigation being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice."

No charges were filed against Lowe on Thursday. However, he appeared in Wood County Circuit Court, and a Sauk County judge ordered him jailed on a $20,000 cash bond, authorities said.

According to the Wisconsin Rapids Human Resources Department, Lowe joined the police department in April 1995. He was promoted sergeant in 2009 and lieutenant in 2010. His salary for 2013 was $71,700.

A lieutenant on the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department has been arrested on suspicion of child enticement and using a computer to facilitate a sex crime, authorities said Thursday.

Lt. Steven Lowe was placed on administrative leave "in response to an investigation being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice," Wisconsin Rapids Police Chief Kurt Heuer said in a statement.

Wood County Sheriff's Lt. Quentin Ellis said Lowe was arrested Wednesday and booked in the county jail on suspicion of child enticement, use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime and sexual exploitation of a child.

Ellis said Lowe was arrested by agents with the state Department of Criminal Investigation.

Heuer released no other details in his statement and his telephone voice mail said he would be out of his office until Monday.

Dana Brueck, a spokeswoman for Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, said the Department of Justice does not comment on ongoing investigations.
