UPDATE: Disturbing details in ex-officer's death

GRAND RAPIDS (WAOW) -

The former Wisconsin Rapids police lieutenant found dead in his pickup truck died of multiple wounds from a nailing gun, Wood County Deputy Coroner Gabe Holczer said Tuesday.

Steven Lowe shot himself in the chest with the construction tool “multiple times” just days after being arrested in a child sex investigation, Holczer said. No suicide note was found.

Lowe, 41, was found in the truck Monday morning at his home in Grand Rapids, Holczer said.

Based on an autopsy Tuesday, investigators believe Lowe died sometime between midnight and 4 a.m. Monday, the deputy coroner said.

Lowe was arrested July 31 and booked in the Wood County Jail on suspicion of child enticement, use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime and sexual exploitation of a child. Lowe resigned from the police department the next day and later was released from jail after posting a $20,000 cash bond.

According to Wood County court records, state investigators say Lowe posed as a teenage girl on the Internet to try to obtain naked pictures of boys.

No formal charges were filed before Lowe's death.

The investigation of Lowe began with a tip from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, according to a probable cause statement filed with a judge.

The document indicates the investigation began in late June with information about a February "chat" between Lowe and a 16-year-old boy living in the United Kingdom in which Lowe seeks naked pictures of the boy.

During a search of three computers at Lowe's home in late July, Lowe told state agents that he would cooperate with law enforcement, "that he needed help," the probable cause statement said.

A former Wisconsin Rapids police lieutenant arrested in a child sex investigation just days ago has died, authorities said Monday.

The Grand Rapids Police Department says Lt. Steven Lowe, 41, was found dead in the back of his truck Monday morning.

Wood County Coroner Garry Kronstedt told Newsline 9 it appears Lowe killed himself, but an autopsy will determine that. He said that autopsy was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

He had not been formally charged as of Monday, according to online court records.

According to the Wisconsin Rapids Human Resources Department, Lowe joined the police department in April 1995. He was promoted sergeant in 2009 and lieutenant in 2010.

Investigators say Lowe's death is an ongoing investigation.

Grand Rapids is a suburb of Wisconsin Rapids.
