Scam targets elderly in our area

Authorities in Lincoln County are warning people about a scam targeting the elderly.

Sheriff's officials say a woman got a call yesterday from someone claiming to be her grandson. They say the man told the woman he was in jail in Mexico and needed money. Authorities say the woman started to wire the money, but stopped at the last minute and called police.

"What she said was the caller knew a lot of information about her, details she didn't think people would know," explained Lt. Tim Fischer of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. "That's the thing, the person doesn't care who they take the money from as long as they get the money so they will do their homework."

Sheriff's officers say in this case, the woman was lucky. But it's a good reminder to be careful.

"If there's any hesitation, get a contact number and tell them you'll call them back. Verify information. If things sound too good to be true, they probably are," said Lt. Fischer.

Lincoln County authorities say they get hundreds of calls a year reporting these scams.
