Uncle in Rhinelander shooting remains critically hurt

RHINELANDER (WAOW) – Eight days after allegedly being shot by his nephew in what police called a dispute over household chores, a Rhinelander man remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday.

Justin F. Alsteen, 49,  was listed in critical condition at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, spokeswoman Carla David said. Police said he was shot in the abdomen Aug. 12.

His nephew, Marcus Alsteens, 23, of Rhinelander, has been charged with three felonies in the shooting – attempted first-degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery and injury by negligent use of a weapon or explosive, according to online court records.

The criminal complaint said the uncle and nephew argued at their home in Rhinelander before Marcus Alsteens went to his bedroom, retrieved a 7mm rifle from a gun cabinet, went to his uncle's bedroom and shot him.

The nephew fled the home and was arrested within hours near Eagle River, , the complaint said.
