Documents detail CIA's role in 1953 coup in Iran

Newly declassified documents offer more details of how the CIA executed the overthrow of Iran's democratically elected prime minister 60 years ago.

The documents describe the political frustrations that led the U.S., in 1953, to take covert action against a Soviet ally -- and echo the current U.S. frustrations with Iran over its nuclear ambitions.

It's long been known that the United States and Britain played key roles in the overthrow of Iran's prime minister. The CIA has acknowledged its role previously, even including the coup in a timeline on its website last year.

George Washington University's National Security Archive posted the heavily redacted documents on its website this week.

The archive says the documents amount to the CIA's first formal acknowledgement that it helped plan and execute the coup.
