UPDATE: Possible lightning strike damages Wausau home

Wausau fire officials say they believe a lightning strike caused some damage to a duplex on the city's east side. They say the damage was enough to displace two families for a night.

This happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday on E Union Avenue.

"There was smoke coming out of the upper vent and the attic. It was fairly light and it was confined to the second story," said Wausau Battalion Chief Mark Krueger.

Krueger says a lightning strike may have caused damage in the upper level of the duplex.

"There's damage to the second floor, it's confined to two rooms at this time," said Krueger.

Officials say a family was home at the time.

"They noticed the problem a short time afterward," said Krueger.

Krueger says firefighters were able to get it under control fairly quickly and says the damage was fairly minimal.

"Red Cross is going to come over and they're going to provide them a place for the evening," said Krueger.

The family did not want to talk on camera, but told Newsline 9 they're just glad it wasn't worse.

Fire officials say lightning damage to homes can be common when severe weather hits.
