Merrill man claims $1.4 million Lottery prize

MADISON (WAOW) – A Merrill man claimed the $1.4 million Megabucks jackpot on Thursday that he won in the Wisconsin Lottery weeks ago.

Paul Wegener, who spent years in the insurance business, told Lottery officials that he didn't overreact when he won the prize June 22.

He called his tax accountant,” the Lottery said in a statement. “He said he waited to claim his prize in hopes that the interest surrounding the jackpot would die down.”

Wegener declined to take part in a news conference to talk about his winnings, the Lottery said. He did not immediately return a telephone message left at his home late Thursday afternoon.

Wegener chose the $953,000 cash option of the $1.4 million jackpot and took home $640,000 after taxes, the Lottery said.

Wegener, described as an infrequent lottery player, purchased the winning ticket at Drew's Supermarket East in Merrill. The store received a $28,000 commission, the Lottery said.

Wegener's winning Megabucks numbers were 03, 10, 12, 15, 30 and 41.
