Graft trial resumes for ousted Chinese politician

JINAN, China (AP) -

Trial has resumed for former high-flying Chinese politician Bo Xilai, who is accused of corruption and involvement in an attempted coverup of his wife's murder of a British businessman.

Bo put up a fierce defense on the trial's opening day Thursday. He denied taking $3.5 million in bribes from businessmen and cross-examined one of them with a lawyer's precision.

The trial is aimed at capping China's biggest scandal in decades, one that was a major distraction to the country's communist leaders as they grappled with an economic slowdown and other challenges.

Prosecutors Thursday had rolled out accusations that featured a villa in France, a hot-air balloon project and a football club, giving a glimpse of how colorful corruption can look in China.

Friday's session is expected to deal with the remaining two charges of embezzlement of government funds and abuse of office.
