United Way Duathlon draws hundreds to Stevens Point

Hundreds of people hit the pavement in Stevens Point for a duathlon.

The Run, Bike, Unite Duathlon took place Saturday morning.

Organizers say it's to kickoff United Way of Portage County's 2013 fundraising campaign. They say the money raised is used to support programs in the community.

The race consisted of a 2-mile run, a 14-mile bike ride, and then another 2-mile run.

"We're trying to raise money to support all of our local community activities from backpacks for kids to tax preparation and for abused families and children that are in need," said Race Director, Michelle Peariso.

"Well for me I'm an OK runner and I'm an OK rider but I'm not really good at either one but if I can combine them I can usually get a decent result, I think a lot of people like a variety," said Jeff Abitz of Appleton.

Around 700 people took part in Saturday's race. Organizers say they hope to raise about $10,000.
