Sports Express - Week 2 Preview

Each week during the high school football season, the Sports Express team will provide a list of match-ups to watch for, including our Game of the Week. Catch the highlights every Friday night on Sports Express during Newsline 9 at 10.

CW-10 vs. CW-8

Wild Rose (0-1) at Amherst (1-0), 7PM

Amherst hasn't lost a game since Nov. 5, 2011. The Falcons will put their 14-game winning streak on the line against Wild Rose on Friday night. The Wildcats are looking for their first win of the season after getting shut-out by Iola-Scandinavia, 35-0, in the opener.

Mississippi Valley vs. CW-8

Aquinas (1-0) at Pacelli (1-0), 7PM

Isaac Elliot passed for 255 yards last week for Pacelli, with most of those throws going to teammate Brett O'Sullivan, who caught for 167 yards in the Cardinals' 45-12 victory over St. Mary Central. Aquinas won their season opener last week over Prairie du Chien, 33-14.

CW-10 vs. CW-8

Iola-Scadinavia (1-0) at Rosholt (0-1), 7PM

Rosholt suffered a season-opening shut-out loss to Amherst last Friday night. This week, they play in their home opener against Iola-Scandinavia, a team that shut out Wild Rose last week. Nick Wavruk is a dual-threat QB that passed for 98 yards and rushed for 140 yards in the season opener.

VFA South vs. VFA North

Wisconsin Rapids (1-0) vs. D.C. Everest (0-1), 7PM at Steihm Stadium

Rapids defeated Wausau East in the first game of the season, but lost running back Ryan Duxbury, who injured his knee on the final carry of the game. Duxbury's status for Friday's game against D.C. Everest is questionable. The Evergreens have yet to score a point this season after getting shut-out by SPASH last week, 21-0.

VFA South vs. VFA North

Marshfield (0-1) vs. Wausau East (0-1), 7PM at Thom Field

Marshfield missed an extra-point attempt against Wausau West that would have tied the game at 10 in the final minutes. Instead, the Tigers face a Wausau East team also searching for their first victory of the year. Look for Bryce Widmark to step up following his 280-yard passing performance last week.

Athens (1-0) at Loyal (1-0), 7PM – GAME OF THE WEEK

Athens and Loyal shared the Cloverwood title with Owen-Withee last season. The Bluejays defeated the Greyhounds 35-7 in the 2012 season opener. One team will remain undefeated while the other suffers their first loss of the season. This game could determine the Cloverwood champion later this season. Look for the Greyhounds to rely on their run game.

Newman Catholic (0-1) at Thorp (0-1), 7PM

Last week, Newman came up short of scoring a single point despite driving into the redzone on three separate occasions, and totaling 135 yards rushing and 128 yards passing. Thorp will honor its 1993 State Championship team in a ceremony before the game.

Great Northern vs. Marawood

Tomahawk (0-1) at Auburndale (0-1), 7PM

Auburndale only put up 8 points in their 43-8 loss to Marathon last week. That's eight more points than Tomahawk, who got shut-out by Chequamegon last week, 19-0. Friday's game is the home-opener for the Apaches.

Marathon (1-0) at Pittsville (0-1), 7PM

Pittsville head coach Dan Hahn said "We'll need to keep working" after his team lost to Stratford last week, 47-16. The Panthers face the Red Raiders in their home opener. Marathon is one of four teams in the Marawood with 1-0 records after the Red Raiders took down Auburndale, 43-8.
