Almost 25-years ago Lily Kongslien of Rhinelander decided to reach out and help survivors of domestic violence.
"I had one family member who came to a shelter. Although,I didn't really understand it and you don't... Until you're involved in it," said Konglsien.
She worked at a shelter in Rhinelander. Although her health no longer allows her to work those long hours, she remembers the important information she needed to gather when answering calls on the crises hotline.
"Are you safe? Where are you? What is your phone number? And then we would get into what happened," reflected Kongslien.
She says she spent hours working with children and adults--both men and women.
"Mainly, I have a listening ear. I listen to their stories. And when they tell about things. And I don't interrupt, said Kongslien.
She described many of the stories as heartbreaking--yet she refused to turn away.
"I can't say i enjoyed it because you don't get enjoy something like that. But, I got a great satisfaction."
In July--Lily will celebrate her 91st birthday. Looking back on a lifetime of volunteering -- she hopes it will inspire others.
