Mosinee quarterback Zach Pyan didn't start playing football until 7th grade, and wasn't even a QB until 8th grade. By Wisconsin standards, he's considered a late bloomer.
But our Athlete of the Week has led the Indians to a perfect 2-0 record. And it's what he did this past summer that made all the difference.
"I like having the pressure to do good for the team," Pyan said.
Pyan did plenty of good work last season, his first as Mosinee's starting quarterback. He completed over 1100 passing yards and 800 plus rushing yards.
The result was a 7-2 record and a share of the Great Northern conference title.
"He's a competitor. He's going to compete hard at anything he does," Mosinee head coach Paul Nievinski said. "Last year, he was a very good quarterback. This year he's a great quarterback."
Maturity and 7-on-7 football made the difference between good and great.
"It took me awhile to mature as a passer and as for reading defenses, at first I didn't know what I was reading," Pyan said.
Pyan played 7-on-7 every other Sunday throughout the summer. The senior says he's 100 percent better than he was last season.
"This year's 7-on-7 really helped me a lot to know how to read coverages and what to read," Pyan said. "If I wasn't doing 7-on-7, I wouldn't know how to read defenses."
In just two games, Pyan has already passed for over 300 yards and six touchdowns, and is on pace to surpass last year's totals.
"There are two people that touch the ball every time in HS football," Nievinski said. "That's the center and the QB. I'm happy he's touching the ball every game."
