WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -

Hospital officials at St. Joseph's in Marshfield say a man airlifted after a crash near Wisconsin Rapids is listed in fair condition.

Wood County Sheriff's Department officials say Malcolm Leach, 57, drove into a ditch, hit a roll of hay, rolled over and ended up on the shoulder at Highway 73 and Knuth Road. Authorities say they're not sure why the he lost control in the first place.

Sgt. Lee Garrels tells Newsline 9 the car then caught on fire and the driver was unconscious at the time. Garrels says a passerby pulled the man out of the car.

Officials say Highway 73, which was closed because of the burning hay, has since been reopened.

Garrels says the man who pulled the driver out is being treated for smoke inhalation.

The crash remains under investigation.
