Man flees sex charge, survives 4 months in Andes

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -

A story of survival in the snow-covered Andes has taken a somber turn. Officials in Chile say the Uruguayan man who was lost for four months was fleeing from the law.

Raul Gomez was rescued Sunday by an Argentine helicopter crew and is recovering in a hospital, very skinny but alive.

It wasn't clear at first what led the 58-year-old plumber to start the trek from Chile in May. He apparently had no mountaineering experience. Now officials say he was on the run from child sex abuse charges that were filed against him in April.

Gomez says he survived by eating rats and owls and a few raisins after exhausting the meager supplies in the refuge.
