Wausau man to stand trial in park attack

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A judge on Wednesday ordered a Wausau man to stand trial on felony charges accusing him of attacking a woman at a park.

Robert Woods, 32, was charged with strangulation and suffocation with threats to injure in the July 24 attack. He was charged as a repeat offender because he's been convicted of at least three misdemeanors in the past five years, according to court documents.

A judge ruled prosecutors presented enough evidence during Wednesday's preliminary hearing to justify the charges. Woods is to return to court Sept. 27 to enter pleas, according to online court records.

Police said a woman was trying to leave a Wausau park when Woods came up behind her and threw her to the ground. Authorities say he tried to strangle her and pushed her down an embankment.

The woman resisted and was able to get his license plate number as she called 911, police said.

Woods is free on a $25,000 cash bond.
