We're days away from the 57th Smiley Cross Country Invite in Wausau, and the SPASH boys enter the weekend as the favorites after winning their home meet last weekend and the DC Everest invite on Tuesday.
Sam Anderson looks to lead the way for his team along the trails and the hills. The senior did so last Saturday, finishing second overall in Stevens Point, running the 5k course in 16 minutes and 24 seconds.
Anderson finished sixth at state last year and wants to better that result by placing in the top three.
His other goal? To break the 16 minute barrier in cross country racing.
"I need to be in that lead group. Otherwise, I don't feel confident. So for me, it's always been that first mile, I always try to get out in front," Anderson said.
"When I get out faster, I am usually better at holding that pace than if I go out slow. Then it becomes where it's just all mental game. If you have someone running out there close with you. It's very much just who has it mentally."
