Grand Theater fundraising campaign goes public

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Grand Theater will undergo $3 million in improvements to maintain and upgrade the historic complex.
Leaders said $2.4 million - from 70 people, business and foundations - has already been donated for the work and a public campaign was launched Thursday to raise the rest.
"Eleven years have passed since the ArtsBlock Project combined three historic buildings into our North Central Wisconsin's leading cultural center," Performing Arts Foundation Director Jim O'Connell said in a statement. "Since 2002, more than a million people have come to The Grand for entertainment, education and celebration of all kinds. It's time to reinvest in these facilities so that they can continue to serve as the region's performance space and our community's gathering place."
The Grand Theater is almost 86 years old and the two buildings flanking it are more than 100 years old, he said.
O'Connell said two projects have already started - replacing limestone on at the lowest level of the Grand facade and a new sound system in the The Grand auditorium.
