Posted: Updated:

Just before the crash that seriously injured an 18-year-old motorcyclist in Marshfield, a witness saw the motorcyclist do a “wheelie” with the front tire off the ground, according to a police report.

Two witnesses told police they “heard the motorcycle's engine rev prior to the collision” with a sports utility vehicle, the report said.

The motorcyclist was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Marshfield police said.

The crash happened about 4 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of East Becker Street and North Weber Avenue. The SUV driver, a 19-year-old Marshfield woman, was not hurt.

Marshfield Police Chief Gary Jepsen said Friday it's unclear what role the "wheelie" may have played in the crash, but some witness accounts reported the motorcyclist was speeding.

Jepsen said the SUV was making a left turn in front of the motorcycle when the crash occurred.

Experts at reconstructing the crash are trying to determine how fast the motorcycle was traveling, Jepsen said. The speed limit on East Becker Street is 25 mph.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and his driver's license was suspended, Jepsen said.
