Green building demolition in Merrill

The former Anson & Gilkey factory in Merrill is undergoing a green demolition. Most of the twelve buildings on the site are being torn down by hand.

John Malm of ICE Realty is overseeing the project.

Malm said, "Most of the buildings have been here about a hundred years which means they are made out of the largest timbers you can imagine."

Instead of using heavy equipment for the tear down workers take the buildings down by hand.

Workers remove nails from wood and then the salvaged materials can be sold.

Malm works closely with American Relics of Wausau to find buyers for salvaged wood, vintage doors and windows and rustic metals.

"Some of the materials have gone to New Zealand others are here in the U. S. and some is one its way to Japan," said Malm.

The project has been years in the making.

Merrill community leaders say the building is an eyesore and included on a list of blighted city properties in need of repair.

City Administrator David Anderson said,"The Anson Gilkey property on the river is the largest project in our blight elimination project right now ."

The city has targeted December of 2015 for completion of the project,

The owners of the site then plan to sell it.

Malm said,' "It will most likely be mixed use, commercial, residential and public.. with a river component that ties into the river bend."
