Sports Express - Week 6 Preview

Posted:

Each week during the high school football season, the Sports Express team will provide a list of match-ups to watch for, including our Game of the Week. Catch the highlights every Friday night on Sports Express during Newsline 9 at 10.

Marawood

Edgar (5-0) at Stratford (4-1), 7PM – GAME OF THE WEEK

The Wildcats will put their undefeated season on the line against Stratford in a heated Marawood conference rivalry game. The last time Edgar lost in a regular season game to Stratford was in 2005. However, the Tigers beat the Wildcats in postseason play since then, including a 7-3 victory in the 2008 Division 6 State Title game.

Marawood

Tomahawk (1-4) at Marathon (5-0), 7PM

Marathon has been on a roll since their 16-0 win over previously unbeaten Stratford in Week 4. The Red Raiders have scored 58 unanswered points and have only allowed a total of 15 points this season. If the Hatchets want to salvage a winning record this season, Friday's game is a must-win.

VFA North

Wausau East (1-4) at D.C. Everest (2-3), 7PM at Stiehm Stadium

With four games left, both of these teams are looking to keep playoff hopes alive with a win on Friday. The Lumberjacks struggled in the run game last week against Appleton East, amassing just 23 yards. The Evergreens look to win two in a row for the first time this season after defeating Appleton West, 34-27, in Week 5.

VFA North

Kaukauna (0-5) vs. Wausau West (3-2), 7PM at Thom Field

The Warriors look to bounce back from a shut-out loss to the VFA North's top team, Appleton North, last week. Kaukauna, the last place team in the division, also got shut-out in Week 5, losing to Kimberly, 45-0.

VFA South

Wisconsin Rapids (1-4) vs. Marshfield (4-1), 7PM at Beell Stadium

Marshfield has been on offensive powerhouse in the VFA South since their Week 1 loss to Wausau West. The Tigers sit at the top of the conference alongside Oshkosh North and have not scored less than 42 points in each of their last four games. The Red Raiders continue to search for their first conference win.

VFA South

Neenah (3-2) vs. SPASH (2-3), 7PM at Goerke Stadium

SPASH started out the season 2-0 but have since lost three straight. Friday's game is a must-win for the Panthers to keep playoff hopes alive, with a match-up against Marshfield looming in two weeks.

Neenah's Jake Resch is on the verge of eclipsing the 1000 passing yards mark this week, entering Friday's game needing just 14 yards to reach four-digits this season.

Mississippi Valley vs. Great Northern

Onalaska (2-3) at Mosinee (4-1), 7PM

The Indians play their final non-conference game of the year, hosting the Hilltoppers in Week 6. Onalaska needed four overtimes to defeat Aquinas last week, 30-27, and can get to an even. 500 record with an upset over the second-best team in the Great Northern.

Cloverwood

Abbotsford (2-3) at Owen-Withee (5-0), 7PM

The Blackhawks are coming off a convincing 27-point win over previously unbeaten Greenwood/Granton. O-W controls its destiny to win the Cloverwood conference from here on out as they play the first of three straight home games, beginning with Abbotsford in Week 6. The Falcons are slowly turning their season around after an 0-3 start and look for their 3rd straight victory.

Cloverwood

Athens (4-1) at Thorp (0-5), 7PM

Since their Week 2 loss to Loyal, the Bluejays have averaged 42 points per game, most recently dominating Assumption, 60-0, in Week 5. Athens QB Collin Ellenbecker went 5-for-6, 134 yards and 2 touchdowns while the defense limited the Royals to just 86 yards.

Cloverbelt

Colby (5-0) at Stanley-Boyd (5-0), 7PM

A battle of unbeaten teams will decide the fate of the Cloverbelt as the third-ranked Hornets travel to face the Orioles. The last time Stanley-Boyd allowed a score was in Week 4 against Osseo-Fairchild, scoring 89 unanswered points since then. Friday's game is a rematch of last year's Level 1 playoff game, which Colby won by two points.

CW-10

Rosholt (3-2) at Port Edwards (4-1), 4PM

This game features the top two teams in the conference, both undefeated in CW-10 play. Both teams are coming off huge wins in Week 5 and both are looking for their fourth straight victory. Friday's game is the sixth and final home game for the Blackhawks.

CW-8

Manawa (3-2) at Amherst (4-1), 7PM

The Falcons are coming off their first loss in 18 games as the defending Division 5 State Champions look to bounce back with a win at home against Manawa. Amherst lost, 21-14, in Shiocton in Week 5, while Manawa is coming off a 26-13 win over Pacelli. The Wolves can take over second place in the conference with an upset victory.
