Woman charged in fatal Portage Co. crash

PORTAGE COUNTY (WAOW) -

An Amherst woman is now facing homicide charges, after Portage County Sheriff's Department officials say she caused a fatal crash. Hanna Schacht, 23, has been charged with four felonies, including homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

According to a criminal complaint, sheriff's officials say Schacht was drinking and driving, when she crashed into another car, killing the passenger. Authorities say Daniel Wetzel, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene. They say his son, Richard Wetzel, 31, was left seriously injured.

Court documents show Richard Wetzel told officers that he and his father were on their way to help a friend who recently was involved in a car crash.

Court documents say Schacht admitted to driving too fast. Those records say Schacht told authorities she had been drinking the night before, stopping between 4-5 a.m. Sheriff's officials say she had a preliminary blood alcohol content of 0.15 after the crash. According to the criminal complaint, one of Schacht's passengers told investigators he estimated she was driving between 65-70 miles per hour. Officials with the Portage County Sheriff's Department say the speed limit on the road where the crash happened is 45 miles per hour.

Schacht is facing up to 75 years in prison, if found guilty on all four counts. She remains in the Portage County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Schacht is scheduled to appear in court again in October. Her attorney did not immediately return our calls for comment.
