Reps Duffy, Kind ask for pay to be withheld during shutdown

Posted: Updated:

Rep. Sean Duffy (R-7th District) has asked for his pay to be withheld during the government shutdown.

In a short letter obtained by Newsline 9, Duffy tells the chief administrative officer, "I have been informed that during the lapse of appropriations and government slowdown that Members of Congress will continue to receive their salary. Please withhold my pay during this time."

Duffy sent the letter Tuesday morning, according to spokeswoman Cassie Smedile.

Rep. Ron Kind (D-3rd District) also plans to decline a paycheck.

"Rep. Kind will not take his salary as long as furloughed federal workers go without pay," said Kind spokesman Peter Knudsen.

Newsline 9 also tried to find out whether Wisconsin's senators will accept a paycheck. A spokeswoman for Republican Sen. Ron Johnson said the senator has decided not to take a paycheck during the shutdown.

As for Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, no one answered the phone in her office. A message on her website said her office is closed.
