"Blessings in a Backpack" helps students in Weston

Some Weston elementary school students took home more than homework for the weekend.

“Blessings in a Backpack” distributed 56 backpacks filled with food for needy students.

The food included fruit cups and cereal that are enough for two breakfasts, two lunches, and two snacks. The students bring the backpacks home on Friday and bring them back Monday.

"We were very eager to be involved in this because we have kids who are in need of this type of program," said Fritz Lehrke, the principal of the elementary school.

The backpacks will be restocked next week to go home again the following weekend. They will be distributed for the rest of the school year.
