"Tucker Turtle" visits Wausau students

Wednesday, parents and students in Wausau learned about a new teaching method.

It's called the Pyramid Model.

Teachers said it focuses on helping students develop lifelong social and emotional skills.

Hundreds of people joined in the event at Wausau West, hosted by the A.C. Kiefer Center.

Students met the school mascot, "Tucker Turtle", who helps them find ways to reduce bad behaviors.

"All of these things we often assume children just learn and pick up just from being children, some children we know from research actually need to be instructed, taught specifically, how to do this," said Lana Nenide, Wisconsin Pyramid Model Coordinator.

The event also included an obstacle course and book fair.

Organizers estimate more than 1,000 people took part.
