Children learn hands on about fire safety

The Park Ridge Fire Department allowed kids to walk in their boots Saturday.

The department held its seventh annual Fire Safety Day". Children were able to climb out of a smoke house and put out a "fire" with a hose or extinguisher.

The sheriff's department also fingerprinted the children and gave out fire helmets. Organizers say the event prepares young ones with fire safety tools they may need one day.

"Part of the firefighting process is not necessarily to put out fires it's also to prevent them," said Park Ridge Fire Chief Ron Slicer.

All of the firefighters that helped today were volunteers. Organizers say the event had about 200 children throughout the day.
