UPDATE: Wausau School Board will review superintendent's performance

The Wausau School superintendent is now under a microscope after a holiday music debate that sparked national attention.

The Wausau School Board voted Monday night to review Superintendent Kathleen Williams and her performance.

She received a lot of criticism over her handling of the entire situation.

The John Muir Middle School auditorium became the center of a tense discussion, all about the leaders of the Wausau School District.

"This is much more than a music issue, it's a communication and an administration issue," said Mike Fischer, a parent.

Mike Fischer's children attend school in Wausau. He supported reviewing the performance of Kathleen Williams, the superintendent.

"As a parent, as a community member, I felt I needed to come tonight and state what I was seeing, what I was feeling about this," said Fischer.

Some people also asked for Williams' resignation after a debacle over religious music.

The district had proposed doing that at holiday concerts. That sparked an uproar and the district backtracked.

The superintendent even apologized.

At this meeting, some were willing to stand up for Williams, her job and her reputation.

Still, board members voted to review Williams' performance, beginning next week.

"It's clear to me that we have an awful lot of work to do as a board, to regain the trust, confidence and respect of the stakeholders within the Wausau School District," said Pat McKee, Wausau School Board Member.

Williams responded and said everything happened quickly.

"Why is this, that when we're in the middle of the process and no final decisions have been made, did this erupt into the fireball that it did, I'm not sure I completely understand," said Kathleen Williams, Wausau School Superintendent.

She also said she'd like to see a review of everything, not just her role.

"The board and I have yet to sit down and have a discussion regarding this," said Williams.

Board members said they don't want a similar controversy to happen again. For them, figuring out how, will start with the superintendent.

Board members did not discuss creating a music curriculum committee Monday night. One member said that's something they're looking into in the near future.
