Cattle kill from blizzard could lead to a beef shortage

Ranchers in South Dakota are reeling from the blizzard that hit in early October.

Although the exact number isn't known agriculture officials say the storm has killed tens of thousands of cattle.

Add to that the cattle loss due to the drought and ranchers say beef prices will likely increase.

While ranchers may be the first to feel the impact of the cattle loss a UW- Extension Ag Agent tells us it could trickle down to anyone who buys beef.

"It is all about supply and demand. Prices will go up slightly for ranchers and also food supplies," said Heather Schlesser of the UW Extension office in Wausau.
