Taylor County restaurant to reopen along with government

The Mondeaux Dam Lodge in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest will reopen Friday after it was forced to close during the government shutdown.

Steve Kalmon has been running the restaurant in the park for 11 years. His specialty is pizza with homemade sauce and homemade crust.

The government shutdown started to affect his business when the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest had to close.

"I'm not selling any ice, any meals, all my boat rentals were canceled," said Kalmon.

But friends and local customers still stopped by for lunches and dinners until he received a letter saying as a government contractor, he had to close his doors.

On Tuesday, the Forest Service marked the lodge off limits to the public.

Wednesday night, Congress finally reached an agreement to reopen the government.

Around 9 a.m. Thursday, Kalmon got a call from the Forest Service saying he could reopen his business.

"It's coming together," said Kalmon.

Kalmon spent Thursday making arrangements for food. He plans to reopen Friday.

Kalmon will be open for seven more weeks this season and is hoping that time will help him catch up on losses from the closure.
