Whiting man arrested in car theft spree

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) – The Portage County Sheriff's Department says two vehicles found crashed or stuck in a ditch were stolen and the suspected thief was captured in an unlocked garage as he may have been trying to steal a third vehicle.

The incidents were reported early Thursday morning near County Highway HH in the Town of Carson, Chief Deputy Daniel Kontos said.

One of the stolen vehicles was taken in Marathon County, Kontos said in a statement.

Jonathan Bubla, 22, of Whiting, was arrested when investigators near the scene of the crashed car spotted a garage door partially open about 5:25 a.m., Kontos said.

Bubla was arrested without incident on suspicion of car theft, third offense drunken driving and possession of marijuana, Kontos said.

The second vehicle taken in the spree was stolen from an unlocked garage and the vehicle had keys in it, Kontos said. It was found crashed in the ditch, unoccupied and its engine was running, he said.
