Donated hair helping cancer patients, survivors

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

People in central Wisconsin are cutting their hair for a good cause.

It's another way to draw attention to the battle against breast cancer.

Leo Johnson stopped by the State College of Beauty Culture to donate the hair he'd spent a year and a half growing out.

"My wife, who is with me today, she had breast cancer seven years ago and she wouldn't let me shave my head," said Johnson. "So I decided to let it grow and donate it to the Locks of Love."

He's one of many donors parting with their hair for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"It makes us feel incredible because we know all that hair is going to a cancer patient, a cancer survivor who has lost their hair," said Andi Burns, the beauty college owner. She said the school had collected almost 2,000 inches of hair by Thursday afternoon.

The school is taking donations all month long.

"It's also a great way to teach our students how to get involved, how to give back to the community, and just experience the gift of giving," said Burns.

It's a gift Johnson says he's happy to give.

"It's great to make awareness for breast cancer," he said.

If you'd like to donate to Locks of Love, you still can. The State College of Beauty Culture is taking appointments. Leaders say the shampoo, cut, and style are free.

The proceeds benefit the Central Wisconsin Susan G. Komen Foundation.
