After 50 years, Wausau hobby shop closing

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A Wausau store that has sold hobby and craft goods - from radio-controlled cars to cake-decorating supplies - for 50 years is closing.

"We are going out of business," Pope's Hobbyland owner Warren Pope said Friday. "We are having a retirement sale after 50 years."

The store will close Monday and Tuesday to mark down prices for the going-out-of-business sale that starts Wednesday, Pope said.

The business opened in 1963 and the current store on Third Avenue was constructed in 1976, Pope said.

"I started this thing because I was into model airplanes and flying radio-controlled airplanes," the 76-year-old Pope said.

As the store gets ready to close its doors, its inventory includes such things as beer- and wine-making supplies, kites, candy and arts and crafts supplies, the owner said.

"The radio-controlled car has probably been the best seller," Pope said.

The closing sale will run through Nov. 30, Pope said.

Pope said he and his wife Audrey have mixed emotions about closing the store.

"I feel sad and glad," he said. "I am sad that our good customers are losing out but I am glad for myself and my wife."
