Police: "Belligerent" father tased outside school

Stevens Point police say a "very belligerent" father was tased outside Stevens Point Area High School on Friday after a knife fell out of his pocket.

The father had gone to the school looking for his son about 12:30 p.m. and refused to sign in or follow school protocol for visitors, causing a police school liaison officer to intervene, said Sgt. Tony Babl, a spokesman for the Stevens Point Police Department.

The parent still refused to cooperate and was escorted outside, where he continued to be agitated as other police officers arrived, Babl said.

"The parent was asked for identification and when removing his wallet, a large folding knife fell out of his pocket onto the ground," Babl said in a statement.

When the father refused to follow police commands not to pick up the knife, he was tased one time and taken into custody, Babl said.

No one was injured and no students were threatened during the incident, Babl said.

No other details were immediately released, including why the father was agitated and uncooperative.
