Forest Co. man accused of throwing toddler

CRANDON (WAOW) – A 29-year-old Wabeno man was charged Wednesday with attempting to kill a 20-month-old child under his care.

Brandon Brunette told investigators that the child fell off a couch, he picked the child up, then the child fell from Brunette's arms to the floor and starting screaming and wailing, the criminal complaint said.

The defendant stated that the screaming sparked something in him and he got up, grabbed (the child) by his left leg and forcefully flung him approximately 10 to 15 feet and he did not stop until he hit the wall or TV stand,” the complaint said.

Brunette was jailed on $100,000 cash bond after he was charged with attempted first-degree homicide, physical abuse of a child resulting in harm and child neglect resulting in harm.

Brunette lives with the child's mother, Forest County Chief Deputy Sheriff Alex Walrath said.
The mother told investigators she's had a relationship with Brunette for about six months and he had never shown any abusive behavior towards her children, the complaint said.

The complaint said an investigation began Oct. 18 when a rescue squad was called to a Wabeno home on a report of a 20-month-old child with a “possible concussion.”

Brunette initially told investigators that he dropped the child once by accident after the child fell off a couch, the complaint said.

The child had a fractured skull, bruising on the face and right shoulder and was initially in critical condition in a Marshfield hospital, the complaint said. A doctor told investigators the injuries were inconsistent with the story of the child being dropped.

Walrath said that the child remained hospitalized Wednesday with “very substantial” injuries.
