Warming Center opens for second season

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

Wausau's Warming Center opens Friday for a second season. This year there's a new location.

The center originally opened in February in the basement of St. Paul's Church in downtown Wausau. But Warming Center leaders said due to high demand they needed to expand. So, they moved to S. 3rd Avenue in Wausau.

The new building offers laundry, showers, a kitchen, and of course a warm place to stay on the cold winter nights coming up.

"We want our community to work out of that (homelessness) situation. We know we will never end homelessness completely but if we can begin to serve those folks and bring up self esteem and make them feel good about themselves that is a huge thing," said Warming Center Coordinator Diane Borchardt.

Volunteers have been running around making those last minute touch-ups before the doors open. Volunteers say it's something small they can do to help the community in a big way.

"We see a lot of the clientele and different people in our jobs at times so it's kind of sad that at this point there was no place for them to go to be warm so this is a blessing for the community I think," said volunteer Sherri Dozd.

The center will admit up to 15 adult men and women. It opens every night at 7:00 p.m., closing at 8:00 a.m. The center is open seven days a week. Last season, officials say, during the cold nights they were at capacity and they are preparing for that again this year.
