SPASH boys win 10th state title

It's been a tradition for the SPASH boys' team to compete with the best in Wisconsin.

The Panthers made their 33rd appearance at the State Cross Country meet and SPASH did much better than their third place finish last year.

There were tense moments at the finish line after the boys' division one race, as SPASH awaited the team results. With 84 points, the panthers won their first state title since 2008.

"It's incredible. We've worked so hard," SPASH senior Sam Sheibley said. "We've fought through injuries. We lost our number one runner, Sam Anderson. But we just kept moving. This was a team that believed in ourselves. This was a team that knew that they could win the championship. No matter what came in our way.'

Sheibley placed 24th while senior Evan Hatton placed 12th as the team's highest finisher. The Panthers placed five in the top 30 of the 190-runners that took the course.

"I've been dreaming about this since 2008 when I was with the fans cheering on my brother and looking up and seeing Stevens Point number one," Hatton said. "It's an incredible feeling."

Hatton's brother, Nathan was part of the 2008 championship team. And Nathan surpised Evan, making the trip from Washington DC to Wisconsin Rapids to congratulate Evan on winning his own state title.
