A new beautification project in Wausau doesn't have the water to keep it beautiful.
Wausau city leaders say a sprinkler system was installed with metal bird sculptures, sod, and LED lighting in the Stewart Avenue median. But there is no water line feeding into the system.
Brad Marquardt, Wausau's public works director, said the water issue came to light during the design process. Now the city is considering options like tapping into nearby private lines.
"We have to work with other property owners and things like that just don't happen overnight," said Marquardt. He hopes the cost of getting the water connected will be within the original budget of $125,000. He says they hope to have the problem resolved by spring.
"It made sense to install the irrigation system now while the construction was going on rather than waiting until we were able to get water to that median and then tearing the new sod up and running the irrigation system between the trees and the boulders and the rocks and the plantings," said Marquardt.
