Longtime friends reflect on Veterans Day, time spent in service

Jim Schaefer and Jack Horak have known each other for a long time.

Both are veterans. Both served in the Army. And both say they're bonded for life.

"I guess when you're in the service, something happens to you that you become a brotherhood. That sticks past the battlefield," said Horak.

"The only thing we have in common is the service," said Schaefer.

They didn't fight wars at the same time, but they say that doesn't matter.

"You pretty much talk the same language, whether you're Army or Navy or whatever," Horak added.

About 100 veterans celebrated the day at the Wausau VFW post, sharing memories of years past.

"Most of the stories get embellished from year to year, I’ll have to say that, but that's just part of it, all the vets do that," said Horak.

"A story always sounds better 50, 40 years later. When there's nobody around to refute what happened," said Schaefer.

They're such good friends, that if they happen to go months without seeing each other, neither misses a beat.

"You just pick up where you left off," said Schaefer.

The two talk about everything, whether it's war stories, or sharing jokes between friends.

"You look back and say you remember the good times. Then you remember the friendships," said Schaefer.

Friendships that endure, and in this case -- that last a lifetime.
