Rothschild biomass power plant fully operational

ROTHSCHILD (WAOW) – We Energies says that its $250 million biomass-fueled power plant at Domtar Corp. is fully operational.

The plant, which burns wood, waste wood and sawdust to produce electricity and steam, began operations Friday, following successful testing, the utility said in a statement Monday.

The addition of the biomass plant enables us to produce renewable energy on demand,” We Energies Chairman Gale Klappa said.

The plant, which was proposed in 2009, is designed to produce up to 50 megawatts of electricity. Domtar uses the steam from the plant for its paper-making operations.

Under Wisconsin law, utilities statewide must use renewable energy to meet 10 percent of the electricity needs of its customers by 2015.

We Energies said the Rothschild plant will allow the utility to comply with that law though 2022.

More than 400 workers contributed to the construction of the plant, and it will support about 150 jobs in northern Wisconsin, including wood suppliers and haulers, the utility said.

We Energies serves more than 1.1 million electric customers in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula and 1.1 million natural gas customers in Wisconsin.
