Wausau warming center short on volunteers

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

As temperatures drop, Wausau's warming center is searching for volunteers.

Leaders said if they don't see more volunteers soon, they may have to find money to hire help.

The warming center is now in its second year and at a bigger location.

The first year, coordinators said they had about 15 guests a night. That was an all volunteer effort.

Now, organizers are asking for more help, but they aren't seeing the response they'd hoped for.

As winter bears down on our area, the Catholic Charities Warming Center in Wausau is busy.

"5 up to 16 guests per night," said Diane Borchardt, Warming Center Coordinator.

Coordinator Diane Borchardt said things are running smoothly, but there's something lacking at the new Third Avenue center.

"It does take more volunteers and that is one thing that I need very badly right now," said Borchardt.

Borchardt said the center has about 140 volunteers, staffing about 12 each night to care for Wausau's homeless.

"We want them to have a warm place to sleep, have a hot meal and for us to provide them with comfort and dignity," said Borchardt.

Administrators at the warming center said they're still in need of volunteers. They need roughly 100 more.

Borchardt said some of the jobs include kitchen crew, laundry and cleaning.

"I, at all don't think we bit off more than we can chew, we can definitely handle up to 20," said Borchardt.

But, the volunteer response has been slow.

"We will get by, there will be nothing that will stop us from continuing on, we will find a way to make this work," said Borchardt.

They said one way could be finding money to hire help.

"We don't have a budget for paid staff in the evenings, but maybe that's something that, again, we would reach out to the community for donations to help pay for staffing," said Borchardt.

For now, leaders hope the community will donate their time.
