UPDATE: Identity released in Walmart death

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) --  The 33-year-old who was found dead in a bathroom inside a Walmart store was identified as William J. Smith III, according to Marshfield Police.

An autopsy was performed in Madison and the cause of Smith's death is pending toxicology report, police said.

The investigation to the cause of death is ongoing.

No other information was immediately released.
No foul play is suspected in the death of a 33-year-old Marshfield man whose body was found in a bathroom stall inside a Walmart store, according to the Marathon County Medical Examiner.

Marshfield police tell us the body was found at 3:00 a.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy was being performed Tuesday, and the Marathon County Medical Examiner's office was involved with the death investigation, Lt. Darren Larson said.

The name of the man was not released pending notification of relatives, Larson said.

Dianna Gee, a spokeswoman for Walmart at its Bentonville, Ark., headquarters, said a maintenance worker at the store discovered the body.

According to a Marshfield Police report, the maintenance worker observed the man in the bathroom for an hour. The worker then informed a co-worker who went to check on the man, found him "unresponsive" and then police were called, according to the report.

"The male was deceased prior to officers arrival," the report said.

"We are going to work with law enforcement as they investigate," Gee said. "It is an unfortunate situation. Our thoughts and prayers do go out to the family."
