Fundraiser to bring Connie McCallister home

ATHENS (WAOW) -

For the last nine years, Connie McCallister's family says they've been wondering and waiting. Now that they know where she is, they can finally talk to her again.

"I keep in contact with her if not every day for sure every other day," said Florence Volzka, McCallister's aunt.

McCallister's family says they don't know when she will be able to come home, but they do know getting her here will be costly.

"There had to be DNA tests for her and the three children and the expense of the legal fees and getting all the paperwork to bring her back," said Judy Weise, an organizer of the soup dinner.

To help, Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens held a soup dinner to raise money. When more than 100 people came to support the cause, her family said they were grateful.

"You can feel all the heartfelt love and people caring and it's been fantastic and I just can't thank everyone enough," said Volzka.

Volunteers served dinner, baked goods, and held a raffle. Organizers say they had donations not only from the Central Wisconsin community, but from across the country as well.

"We've received donations from California, Virginia, Florida, throughout the whole United States," said Weise.

Wausau Police say McCallister went to Mexico on her own, but her family has said otherwise. Until she comes home, they say they won't talk about it anymore.

Family members say they just want the missing piece of their family back again.

"It could be any time though now we're just waiting for the final passport and then and that takes a little while they don't tell us these things," said Volzka.

As her family waits, they will continue to raise money.

"This was about getting enough for her to come home," said Volzka.

Organizers at Trinity Lutheran Church say if you would like to donate money for McCallister, they are accepting donations through the Athens Credit Union.
