Cuban mission in US halts consular services

Cuba's diplomatic mission to the U.S. says it has been forced to halt nearly all consular services because it has lost its ability to do banking in the country.

A statement from the Cuban Interests Section in Washington says M&T Bank notified it in July that it would no longer provide banking services to foreign missions, and Cuba would have to close its accounts.

The statement says Cuba has been unable to line up another institution to handle its accounts.

It blames the half-century-old U.S. economic and financial embargo for its difficulty finding a new bank.

Tuesday's statement says the Interests Section and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York will provide consular services only in humanitarian and other select cases "until further notice."
