City approves taking ownership of Wausau Club

After a close vote the Wausau City Council decided it will take ownership of the former Wausau Club building.

Earlier this month, Tom Schuette, Wausau Homes co-founder, offered the building to the city for free. He said he wanted a decision by December.

On Tuesday, in a 6-5 vote, the city council approved the take over. Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple says the city will hold the building and hope to sell it to a developer. If there's no interest within two years, he says the city will demolish it. Mayor Tipple says it will cost $1,500 per year to maintain the building.

The property is worth about half a million dollars.
