State TV: Earthquake strikes southern Iran, killing 7; nearby nuclear plant not damaged

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -

Iran's state television says at least seven people are dead after an earthquake in southern Iran.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6, and the U.S. Geological Survey says it struck some 38 miles north of the country's only nuclear power plant. State television carried a statement from the plant's operators saying it sustained no damage in the quake.

The provincial governor tells state television that in addition to the seven killed, 45 people were injured.

Local media reports say many people fled their homes, fearful the buildings would crash down on them.

Iran is located in an area where two of the Earth's tectonic plates come together, leaving more than 90 percent of the country crisscrossed by fault lines.
