Local firefighters hope to keep the wreath green

The holidays are a time of lights and beauty, but sometimes it can lead to danger.

That's why area firefighters, including the Wausau Fire Department, have kicked off the annual "Keep the Wreath Green" campaign.

From Thanksgiving through the end of the year, a red light is added to the wreath every time there is a fire. Firefighters say they hope to raise awareness about holiday safety.

"It keeps people aware of what's going on. Out and about we get them asking us, hey how's the wreath doing so people watch it," said engineer, Keith Cortwright.

Firefighters say they average anywhere from eight to twelve fires during the holidays. They say they hope to keep that number down this year.
